"A Matter of Public Record" is a short and easy to read handbook designed to help local officials, citizens and members of the press understand the rules about when state and local records must be made public and when they can be kept confidential. Markowitz said " we are pleased to publish this new handbook on Vermont's public record law. It is our hope that by explaining the public's right to see and copy most of the records within the custody of state or local officials we will promote easy access to Vermont's public records."
Markowitz said, "my office receives many calls from people wanting to know their rights to access government information as well as their rights to privacy. I hope that this pamphlet will be a useful resource for local officials and members of the public to answer important questions about when government records are public, and when they are not."
"A Matter of Public Record: A Guide to Vermont's Public Records Law" is being sent to all town offices and is available free of charge on line or by calling
